The guitar has a white body and a black pickguard, and Johnny signed the back in black marker, "Johnny Ramone, My Main Guitar, 1977-1996." Ramone, born John Cummings, played the Mosrite at nearly 2,000 shows and also used it to record most of The Ramones' albums. The 1965 Mosrite Ventures II model, which the late guitarist used at every Ramones gig from November 1977 through the band's final concert in August of '96, fetched $937,500, according to the Boston-based RR Auction company. I've really liked how this guitar sounds and plays, once I got the problems fixed. I was able to shift them over a bit by drilling some new holes. The pole pieces are shifted over so that they don't line up with the strings. When I swapped in the QP I found that the pickguard bridge cutout doesn't align properly when the pickguard's pre-drilled holes are used. My next move was to 'borrow' a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound from another guitar that I don't play often.
However, I remembered that the GFS was a "vintage" wind at only 6k so it didn't work well with the much more powerful neck pickup. I found that I liked the tone of the stock mini-humbucker. I used the mini-humbucker from the kit and a GFS bladed humbucker I had sitting around. Instead of the kit's cheap pots, I used a couple of Alpha 500k pots I had on hand. Also, due to the effort required to press down chords on the first few frets would have caused them to be out of tune. I suspect that if I had ignored the zero fret and kept the nut unchanged G and maybe the B and D would not have been intonatable. Getting the intonation set was pretty easy, just a few tweaks.
While I was stringing the guitar up for the first time I had two of them unravel at the ball and another snapped near the ball. One quick note about the strings that come with the kit, they're awful. I had considered using a retainer bar like you might see on some 70's guitars but I didn't want to try to find one that fit and I didn't want to improvise something.
